| CALL FOR PAPERS The Danish American Heritage Society announces an international conference on ”Innovation—The Danish Way” to be held on October 1-3, 2009, at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Proposals for papers dealing with any aspect of Danish or Danish-American innovation, past or present, in science and technology, architecture and design, social innovation, the arts and literature, and other relevant areas are welcome. The conference will focus on both contemporary and historical Danish and Danish-American innovation. Send proposals for papers or sessions to Susan Jacobsen, Conference Chair, at susan.Jacobsen@gmail.com or mail to her at this address: 515 Fifth Ave. SE, #1 Minneapolis, MN 55404, USA. Proposals should include a title, brief CV, and one-page abstract. Keynote speaker will be Jørgen M. Clausen, a prominent Danish innovator in industry and education. Clausen is President and CEO of Danfoss, one of Denmark’s large multinational corporations, and Chairman of the Board of Sauer-Danfoss, a major global manufacturing company. He is the past Chairman of Junior Achievement / Young Enterprise Europe, past Chairman of the Board of Risø National Laboratory, and founder with Anette Clausen of Danfoss Universe, Denmark’s only science park and museum. Conference organizers are also pleased to announce that Victor Borge’s daughter, Janet Borge Crowle, will bring highlights from her father’s career in the centennial year of his birth. Danish innovation grows out of a strong sense of planning, research, integrity, and quality. It comes from an environment both hi-tech and traditional, one that combines clean modern design with fairy-tale castles. Denmark’s egalitarian society encourages innovation. Danish institutions maintain a flexibility that allows rapid adaptation to shifting economic and cultural conditions. The Danish national investment in human capital makes health care and higher education available to all, and this safety net encourages artists and entrepreneurs to take risks and innovate without fear of jeopardizing basic human needs. Deeply rooted, Danish innovation draws on traditions in science and technology going back to the Renaissance astronomer Tycho Brahe and the twentieth-century nuclear physicist Niels Bohr; traditions in engineering and manufacturing that include shipping, wind power, and medical technology; renowned traditions in literature, film, modern design, and the fine arts. Moreover, Danish innovation takes place among people who are ranked year after year as the happiest in the world. The international conference, ”Innovation—The Danish Way,” encourages new approaches to understanding contemporary and historical Danish and Danish-American innovation. |
